Just note that serving sizes are huge so it’s not uncommon to share a meal.Įverything on their menu is good but I’d recommend their fajitas or going for a combination plate with a sope and an enchilada or tacos. Inside, you’ll find a relaxing atmosphere, a lively cantina, and high and lofty ceilings. It’s where we’ve had a lot of celebratory dinners (like my 18th birthday dinner!) and I’ve still never found myself tired of their menu, which serves up somewhat traditional Mexican fare. Or, if you’d prefer to check out the atmosphere of downtown Santa Cruz and eat at a sit-down Mexican restaurant, head over to El Palomar.Įl Palomar is probably my family’s favorite restaurant-style Mexican place in Santa Cruz. They have a few different locations in Santa Cruz but the one on Mission Street is right along Highway 1. If you don’t want to go too far off Highway 1 and you’re just looking for a quick stop, you can grab a burrito at Taqueria Vallarta. The Mexican food in Santa Cruz is on the healthier side compared to Southern California Mexican taquerias, but I find it just as delicious. If you’re looking to try some Mexican food on the Pacific Coast Hwy, Santa Cruz is no San Diego but it still has some good options like El Palomar and Taqueria Vallarta. This is probably bad to admit, but I actually like the food at Burma Superstar much more than I liked the food in Myanmar when I was living there for a month.īut, then again, maybe that’s because I dealt with food poisoning for most of the month I was in Myanmar. With its growing popularity, Burma Superstar has become somewhat of a beloved Bay Area chain but its original location is the restaurant in the Richmond district.Īs you can probably guess from the name, Burma Superstar serves up Burmese dishes in a variety of unique ways. One of San Francisco’s most famous restaurants just so happens to be located right off the section of Highway 1 that cuts through the Inner Richmond neighborhood. Read my guide to the best things to do in Mendocino.Īddress: 309 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118 Right off Highway 1, Cafe Beaujolais offers a relaxing dining atmosphere in the midst of a garden where you can sample things like wood-fired pizzas and beef bourguignon. The Mendocino area is also known for its scrumptious farm-to-table cuisine and one of the best places to experience that is at Cafe Beaujolais. ![]() In other words, this area of the Pacific Coast Highway can be equally pretentious and down-to-earth. If eating European fusion cuisine in a Victorian farmhouse built in 1893 doesn’t scream Mendocino, I’m not sure what does. Santa Barbara Shellfish Company (Santa Barbara)Īddress: 961 Ukiah St, Mendocino, CA 95460.Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery (Solvang).Pizza My Heart (Santa Cruz & All Over the Bay Area).El Palomar or Taqueria Vallarta (Santa Cruz).Note: the Pacific Coast Highway officially runs from Leggett to Dana Point (not all the way down to San Diego), so you won’t find any restaurants north or south of that area in this article. There are a lot of good places to eat along the Pacific Coast Highway, but these are my top foodie picks down Highway 1 to keep you happy and full throughout the whole trip. It’s a hodgepodge of different styles and flavors that change as you make your way up and down the coast. Similar to the demographics in the Golden State, Coastal California cuisine is a melting pot. It can make all the difference to have a string of fantastic restaurants to keep you going and fueled up on a road trip.Ĭar snacks only go so far and one of the best aspects about doing a road trip in the first place is to experience the local culture of the places you’re driving through.Īnd as I’ve learned from my travels around the world, one of the best ways to get to know a local culture is through its food. ![]() The best restaurants on the Pacific Coast Highway to taste your way through the highlights of California cuisine. ![]()
